Connie Fails

Connie Fails was born in Litchfield, Ill. in 1948. In 1968, as an art major at Southern Missouri State University, Fails was introduced to weaving which lead to an interest in vintage fabric and ultimately fashion design. In 1976, at the urging of a friend, Leslie Singer, now her husband, she gave up her job at a Little Rock stock brokerage firm and opened a small clothing boutique. Her original designs and finely crafted garments attracted a wide and loyal following both in Little Rock and posh boutiques elsewhere such as Henri Bendel's in New York City. In 1978 she met a new client, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Hillary's husband Bill had just been elected Governor of Arkansas and she needed an inaugural gown. Connie was recommended to Hillary because of her knowledge and work with vintage fabrics. The two women quickly developed a close friendship.

That first inaugural gown was put on permanent display in Arkansas' historic Old State House. Twelve years later, it was Fails's custom designed inaugural suit that Hillary wore, following Bill's swearing-in-ceremony as the 42nd president of the United States. Hillary also wore several Connie Fails coats for the inaugural ball and other festivities that week.

In 2004, Fails closed her boutique to accept the position of manager of the Clinton Museum Store. Her visual imagination and energy continues to flourish. She has developed and managed several student mentoring projects including as her Homes for Haiti project and Curbside Couture, a fashion show of student's creatively recycled fashions.
